The existing back building needs renovation and retrofitting, Cunningham said, and the front building will get a new isolation room for new dogs as the old unit is not up to code. An isolation room is used for dogs entering the shelter to prevent the spread of communicable diseases bv dogs that may be ill, or dogfights that often take place when frightened, homeless dogs are tossed into a new group.
County regulations require that an isolation kennel have walls that can be washed down regularly; the old isolation room at the shelter has an electric fuse box on one wall, making hosing the walls impossible. “It was way cheaper to build a new room than re-route the electric service,” Cunningham explained. “Go figure.
