Pickin’ Party
When is a Pickin’ Party a musical happening? Last Saturday the news that the Dark Hollow Bluegrass Band, Brush Arbor Gospel Band and others would be at the Sperryville Volunteer Fire Hall spread like wildfire.
Over 200 whoopin’ and hollarin’ bluegrass and gospel music fans from Rappahannock and Madison counties filled the standing-room-only hall with all seats filled 20 minutes before the music began.
Paul Fincham, one of the founding members of the Dark Hollow band and a Rappahannock native, led the group with his high energy and melodic banjo picking. The voices and guitar of Larry Haynes and Bob Cook, along with Buck Morris on mandolin, produced mountain harmony that thrilled the crowd.
Hank Utz, who started playing at age 7, held the group together with his rhythmic bass guitar. The good looks of spats and fedoras added to the total character of this engaging and talented band. Each of the other groups added to the excitement of this musical night that started at 6 p.m. and ended at 10:30 p.m. Adding to the charm of this evening were the 7-10 year olds who played like puppies in the corner near the stage, the teenagers who soloed and sang with their parents in Hurt Hollow Band and the two and three year olds who danced to the music, hugged the legs of musicians and offered daddy Bob Cook a cookie while he was performing.
Young and old alike were accommodated in this community and family setting. Congratulations to Michelle Jenkins, Donna Yowell, Chrissy Jenkins and other members of the Sperryville Fire Hall Auxiliary for this exceptional evening. Thanks to all the performers who donated their time and talents to this monthly fundraiser.
