Earlier in human history, the seemingly transient nature of death led most people to focus their fears on their fate after death. More recently, scientific knowledge and technical advances have shifted attention to the process of dying itself. We live in an age when life can be prolonged and death forestalled, leaving us to contemplate where and how we will die.
