Depression, I found the old copies of the Loudoun TimesMirror immensely helpful in comparing 1929 in Loudoun County with today. Lack of such records would be a great loss for our nation.
What is the solution? A newspaper is a business. It must find revenues to cover its costs of operation. For many years, these revenues have come from advertising, as marketers used access to the newspapers’ audiences to promote their products to readers. Now many national and regional advertising messages can be delivered more effectively by 30- second TV commercials and Google pop-ups. Many news organizations need new business models, other ways of collecting revenue, to replace these losses.
