But the big papers, The Washington Post, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, to name three, have interesting business problems. Both the Post and the Times have been family owned and managed for generations. Neither family is the type that accepts failure gracefully. The Washington Pbst Co.’s Newsweek has already revised the look of its product, and all print media must be rethinking their business models.
Despite newspapers’ importance to the nation, federal bailouts are unthinkable; news media must be free to criticize government. But it is greatly in the public interest that our national flagship newspapers succeed. Our ability to function as an informed democracy depends on it.
