All four students are in Rappahannock County’s Class of 2009 Top 10. Hathaway learned Wednesday morning that she is the class salutatorian.
Attending Virginia has been a topic that all four admitted came up in conversations throughout the years.
“I went there for the first time as soon as I could take my first steps,” Hathaway said.
Virginia runs in Hathaway’s family. Her uncle, Jimmy Swindler, mother and sister, Sarah, are all graduates.
But on March 26, the day that Virginia announced its decisions online, not one of the four was certain he or she would gain admission. More than 20,000 students applied for the 3,100 freshman spots. The middle 50 percent of first-year students’ average SAT for the critical reading and mathematics is 12201440. Most have grade-point averages around the 4.0 mark.
