If a house has more than one story anti only one bathroom, the farm families prefer this room on the first floor. In houses of more than one story, there should be a bed room on the first floor. Two thirds of the families said that they have overnight guests often enough to warrant providing extra sleeping space.
Information on family preference for general features of a farm hou»e and for location of activities can be used immediately in designing farm houses for the * Northeast.
Information on household activities and family possessions requiring storage will form the basis for laboratory work planned to determine space requirements. Fer example, about half the families said they needed more storage space than they now have. The space actually required to store the quantities of clothing, food, dishes, linens, and household supplies reported on hand by the families surveyed will be determined in the laboratory.
This second phase of the housing research will lead to the development of space standards for storage and household activities and recommendations for efficient and ecenomical ways to arrange space and equipment.
Results will be made available to architects. They will be of particular value to the Department’s Regional Plan Service which aims Regional Plan Service.
