Colonel Woodson went on to say that the toll for the first 10 weeks of 1950 was just about the same as that seen for the same period of 1949 with traffic volumes about seven per cent higher.
In appealing to all Virginians that this appalling situation be curbed, he stated that, as deplorable as it is, the 1949 record is a thing of the past and nothing can be done to improve it. “Individual carelessness, and individual carelessness almost alone was responsible,” he said, “and in the name of common sense, humanity and chic pride, every Virginian should make it his business to see that it does not happen again.”
