each year occur on steps or stairs that families may well give more attention to safe building and upkeep of stairways, housing of the U. S. Department of Agriculture suggests.

Stairs often are built steep to save space. This is dangerous economy, especially for a much used stairway. The treads should be deep enough to held the weight of the foot securely, and the risers just high enough for comfortable stepping. inches deep with risers 9 inches high. Then the angle of the stairs will be no steeper than 30 to 35 degrees. Where space is at a premium, a pull down ladder from the attic may be safer than very steep stairs. To protect heads allow a space of at least 7 feet from stairs to ceiling above.

Psychology plays a part in building safe stairs. Because most people go 'up and down by habit rather than conscious thought, and at a regular pace, stairs need to be uniform. Any off measurement steps interrupt the even pace and may cause falls. Spiral staircases are hazardous' because treads are tapered to the turn. Safer are two straight runs of stairs set up at right angles with a square landing between.
