alongside, long enough for children. Steep stairways need handrails on both sides. Clear lighting is essential to the full length of the stairway, also on doorsteps and porch steps. A good light and a two-way switch at both top and bottom of stairs are recommended. Cellar steps often are dangerously dark. Until good lighting is installed, it helps to paint stairs white ... at least to have the bottom step white. A flashlight kept handy at the head of the stairway is a good safety measure.
To avoid slips, skids and trips, the specialist suggests using wax very sparingly on stairs and avoiding loose scatter rugs at top and bottom of stairs. Carpeting should be fastened firmly on each stepand kept in good repair so that it will not catch heels. Loose boards or nails in steps and stairs have caused many a fall. Another common fall hazard is clutter on stairs . . . toys, boxes, trash containers, etc.
Finally, the specialist urges going slow and easy up and down stairs and never carrying loads so large that you can’t see where you’re going.
