Malignant Edema. — Dr. W. L. Wake reports diagnostic labratory findings on smears taken from calves having died of symptons similar to blackleg to be malignant edema. Labratory diagnosis was sought because of similarity of the two diseases and too, because the calves had been vaccinated against blackleg.
Readers of this column will recall farmers were advised about two years ago to use the double bacterin to protect calves from both blackleg and malignant edema because of outbreaks in Culpeper and Madison Counties. Dr. Wake can supply farmers with the type of bacterin. There is comparatively little difference in cost.
Heifer Vaccination Program. — Indications are that vaccination of heifers against Brucellosis will be postponed until the third week in November. A schedule will be made up Saturday, November 1 and mailed to those having heifers 4-8 months of age to be vaccinated. All requests for vaccination must be made to my office by October 31. Todate 57 farmers have indicated they have 304 heifers to be vaccinated.
Topdress Orchard Grass. — Farmers having established stands of Orchard grass from which they plan to harvest seed next summer are advised to apply 400-500 lbs. of 4-16-8, 4-12-8, or 5-10-10 fertilizers per acre as a topdressing now if such hasn’t already been done this month. If a good stand of lespedeza is in wjth the orchard grass use a 2-12-12 or 0-1414 instead. All milk shippers are urged to attend and learn how such a program can improve their profits from milk.
