In a statement issued today, E. M. Jones, whose name appears on the presidential 'ballot as elector for the Democratic Party from the Seventh Congressional District, has said that his name does not indicate that he personally endorses what he terms the “Truman-Stevenson-Sparkman” ticket.
The Seventh District Elector upheld his personal views with convictions that he was being true to his forebears and to his children by being a “Virginia Democrat.”
E. M. Jones, a member of the Rappahannock Democratic Committee, was named as an elector at the state convention in Roanoke in July.
The statement, which went over Associated Press iwires , today reads:
“The fact that my name appears on the general election ballot as aii elector for the Seventh Congressional District of Virginia under the Truman-Stevenson-Sparkman party does not indicate that I personally indorse or subscribe to the Truman-Stevenson candidacy, policies, or platform.
I cannot indorse some of the stated policies of Truman and Stevenson and still be true to my forebears who have always been Virginia Dmocrats, and also be true to my children whom I hope will always be Virginia Democrats,” states the signed statement of E. M. Jones.
Mr. Jones, long an active member .of the Democratic Committee in the county, had displayed his views privately and the public announcement comes as no great surprise.
Like his fellow-life-long-Democrat, Senator Byrd, he uses the phrase “Virginia Democrat” and words his opposition as being toward the “Truman Party.”
Mr. Jones issued no statement that he would support nor endorse any other nationl political party.
