Pasture Top-Dressing?

You’re Right. It Pays.

Scientific facts to back up the farmer who top-dresses his permanent pastures properly are cited hy Dr, H. L. Dunton, head of the VPI agronomy department.

For instance—at the Charlotte branch of the VPI Agricultural Experiment Station, a, well-fertilized ladino clover-orchard grass pasture produced six times as much forage as an unfertilized area over a fouryear period. The fertilized pasture yield nearly three tons yearly of high-quality ladino clover-orchard» grass forage, in which there were practically no weeds. The unfertilized area gave about one-half ton per acre of a poor quality feed, mostly weeds. This experiment was conducted on a Cecil soil. At the Orange branch, on a productive red soil, properly top*dressed pastures yielded over a ton per acre more of ladino and fescue than did poorly fertilized areas. At the end of two years, there is a much better stand of clover in the well fertilized pasture than in the poorly fertilised one.' v ' • •“ ■ '.
