The Home Stretch
So far, there have been no expressed regrets that the election * will be over by this time time next week. In fact, most folks plainly —and emphatically—state they will be glad to see the end of it.
If one listened to the speeches of both sides, there is only one conclusion: both candidates are liars, cheats, thieves, aids to communism and socialism, and every known and unknown crime and perfidious behavior! They both are fit subjects for (1) a firing squad, (2) the penitiary, and (3) an insane asylum. According to the political speeches it’s a miracle they have escaped lynching!
It’s with relief we can know that by next Tuesday night it will all be over, and we can settle down with the decision made. Regardless of which man or party it is, that's our government for the next four years. We shall treat it with the respect it is due—and cuss it out to our hearts’ content! That’s one of the great privileges of the good-ole’-U.S.A.: we elect the governing officials, agree to abide by the majority rule, and then spend most of our spare moments abusing them!
There have been many thoughts and speeches during the past two months. Some speeches had thoughts, and others didn’t; and vice versa. The wise man has stated that if all citizens concerned themselves with government workings as much every year as they do in election year, we would have a much better country.
Anyway, it’s nearing the end now, and for ruch we can give much thanks. It’s to be hoped we haven’t said too many things for which we will be sorry, and that we haven’t made enemies unnecessarily. It will be difficult to maintain that we desire peace in this war-torn world when we can’t even get along pleasantly with our neighbors for the short duration of an election.
