Tests on bluegrass-white clover pastures conducted in southwest Virginia for a 12-year period, showed that on the average well-fertilized pastures gave more than twice the yield of poorly fertilized ones. Not only was the yield doubled, but the fertilized pasture contained an excellent blue grass-whije clover sod while the ‘ poorly fertilized pasture was mostly broomsage with a little blue grass and practically no white clover.

Dr. Dunton says farmers who fertilize properly get not only high yields of quality forage but two weeks earlier grazing in the spring and two weeks later grazing in the fall. Top-dressing also enables pastures to make a quick comeback after grazing, or when rains come after dry weather. A well-fertilized permanent pasture should furnish from 210 to 240 days of grazing each year. j

Further information on top-dressing pastures can be had from county agents of the VPI Agricultural Exnsion Service.
