Hogs
Hog prices in the short run are expected to show a modest undertone of strength. Daily price fluctuations may occur depending of course on how receipts are affected by wintej" weather conditions. The trend should be slightly upward and no reason is seen to sell hogs under 180 pounds if you have a good feed supply. For the past three years a beginning of the year spurt in prices has been followed by a gradual decline until early summer. The long term outlook this year, however, is expected tocontinue strong into March and April with price gains expected On into the summer. Among reasons for this positive outlook are indications for slaughter to hold slightly above a year ago but then taper off to equal a year earlier by the end of February. Slaughter should then show a sharp cut-back in March and April based on 10 and 8 percent fewer sows farrowed last August and September respectively.
