Because rotten meat has such a powerful odor to humans, it was once thought that vultures and buzzards found their odoriferous food by sense of smell. However, this is not the case. Vultures and buzzards actually have amazing vision which permits them to sight food such as dead animals from great distances and they then move into the dinner table. They are also able to tell from the flying behavior of other vultures and buzzards when these birds have seen food and are then able to come to the genera] area of the rotten meat, ever though so far away that they could not actually see the meat. One of the most interesting bird oddities involves a bird called the Cuckoo, a bird not at all uncommon in Virginia, which places its eggs in the nests of other and smaller birds.
