Interstate highways are being built in the corridors of both of these major routes and when completed will drain off some of the congestion; however, historic trends haifts shown that new traffic on the older roads soon replaces the drainoff and necessitates other improvements. While US 1 had only 2.24 percent of the primary system mileage, it carried 7.88 percent of all primary system traffic during the year.
