Once upon a time the bathroom was, indeed, the “stepchild* of the house. It was uncompromisingly white, and starkly sterile.But no more, says Miss Katherine Habel, home economist at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Today the bathroom has come out of its porcelain and chrome isolation and become part of the decor of the house. Miss Babel says the bathroom lends Itself to decorative touches that give it theme and character. Even without a full remodeling Job, you can work miracles with attractive accents. For instance, try a change of accessories. Hang up a new show er curtain, or Install a shower or tub enclosure. Color-coordinate towels, rugs and shower curtains will help avoid a hit or miss effect. A complete change in color scheme occasionally will help keep your bathroom looking fresh and new. If you are remodeling, a double sink is a good idea. Or, with a modern vanitory, add a functional counter around the basin, with useful storage space below. A laminated top will be durable and easy to keep clean. Add colorful or interestingly made shelves and cabinets if needed. And the trend toward bringing the outdoors indoors has reached the bathroom. You can use pots of green or flowering plants, perhaps a tropical aquarium. For an unusual window treatment, replace the conventional curtain with hanging philodendron. If your bathroom is large you can modernize it by dividing it into separate areas for bathing, dressing, grooming. Dividers insure privacy, and enhance the decorative effect. The divider can be a screen of a closed cabinet for towels or an open cabinet with shelves for pottery, plants, etc. An unused window can provide cabinet space when equipped with shelves, then closed with sliding panel or shutter doors. A tiny bathroom corner can be transformed into a miniature powder room by building a triangular shelf across the angle, and backing it with two mirror panels. Add a suitable light fixture and a padded stool which will slip under the shelf. Likewise, a recess created by an otherwise useless Jag in a bathroom wall can be converted into a -make,u.p 4ind .grooming area.
