and sugar cane are the main crops. The area has the highest sugar cane yields ol any area of India. The great quantity grown permits India to be the world’s largest expo r ter of peanuts, Jenkins notes.

"Irrigation facilities her< are much better than in other parts of India I have visited, The government has helped farmers build irrigation dams and lots of farmers have dug irrigation wells on their owr initiative. Even though some oi the irrigation methods are somewhat primitive, the farmers get the job done becaus* they know their crops depend on it." Jenkins, who graduated from VPI in 1963 with a degree ir animal science, was ar assistant county agent trainee before going to India. He was an outstanding 4-H club member for 12 years, serving as president of his local club and giving public demonstrations in livestock feeding and judging.
Upon his return to this cour try in March, Jenkins will spend the next two months speaking and showing slides of his Indian visit to interested groups. Other Virginians now abroad under the 4-H sponsored IFYE program, and the countries they are in, are: Hunter Spence Virginia Beach, Thailand; and Barbara Woore, Frederick County, Peru, Jean Thomas of Floyd has recently returned Prom Ireland. Virginia, in turn, is playing host this year to eight IFYE Btudents from other countries. Dr. Aubrey R. Slayton, associate state 4-H agent at VPI supervises the 4-H sponsored* FYE program in this 6tate.
