should be able to give information about the exact amount of wages paid to you during the current calendar quarter and the two previous quarters. These wages will not appear In you social security account because it takes time to process the reports from your employers. If you are self-employed, you should take a copy of your last year’s tax return, evidence of payments of the social security tax, and be able to estimate your net earnings for the current year. You may have to submit documents, statements, certifications or any other such proof, but you will be told exactly what is needed. This is the advantage of a visit to the social security office before you are ready to retire. The idea of ‘'inquiring before retiring" is to anticipate any difficulties which may cause delay in receiving your benefits. The Social Security Adminis tration wants to pay you and your family the benefits to which you are entitled as promptly as possible. Filing a claim 2 or 3 months in advance is about the best way to insure against delay. There, fore, we urge you not to postpone your visit if you are 62 years old. Some persons have lost benefits because they did not apply for them soon enough.
