Foods To Be Plentiful
Milk and dairy products, broiler-fryers, and seasonal fresh vegetables are the food that county homemakers will find plentiful during June. The Virginia Cooperative Extension Service and the U. S. Depa rt men t of Agriculture’s Consumer and Marketing Service are cooperating with the American dairy industry during June in its 29th Annual observance of June Dairy Month by calling consumers’ attention to the generous supplies of milk and dairy products in the state. According to USDA estimates, milk output this year may reach a billion pounds above the record 126.6 billion pounds produced in 1964. Production during the first quarter of 1965 totaled an estimated 21.3 billion pounds, or about 109 million pounds more than during the same period a year earlier. Milk supplies are expected to exceed commercial demand this year, USDA reports. The Consumer and Marketing Service reports generous supplies of broiler-fryers are in prospect during June. Marketings will be heavier than last year when prices to producers were near record low. Fresh tomatoes, celery, lettuce, sweet corn, green beans, field peas, and cucumbers are among the vegetables expected in good supply for use in June menus.
