(1) Improvement in selection of soils for corn.

(2) Get soil samples properly for chemical analysis and be guided by test results and soil type in selection of plant foods and rates of application. Generally fertilization is good. In some casses farmers are over fertilizing, in others fertilizers applied are but at token rates. (3) Seeding rates are as they should be. (4) Varieties -- your biggest weakeness and a costly oversight! Men the time has long past to learn by trial and success ( or failure). Let your Research Stations do the experimenting. Check their findings and much of the gamble will be eliminated by selecting varieties that have proven themselves on such a basis. Where is the man in Rappahannock, or Tim-buck-too for that matter, who can look at a field of corn and say whether the yield is 80-90-100 bushels per acre? Follow experiment station findings where accurate measurements of yields, quality are made. To pl^nt a variety 20bushels per acre poorer in yield ability also means $20.00 less gross profit!
