or when testing "Very High” 10 to 20 lbs. phosphoric acid and 5-10 lbs. potassium. Varieties planted included: Southern States 860, 909E, 802 Shawnee, and Matoaka; VPI-646 and 648; DeKalb XL45 and 1051; Funks G 711 and G 91; Pioneer 302. Based on this survey Southern States 860 and 909E and VPI 646 were the most popular. What about these varieties Southern States 860 in the 1964 tests at the Piedmont Station did well at 19,140 stalks per acre - not as well as the old "stand-bys” at the 14,500 rate. At Blacksourgj where climate topography etc< is similar to ours, this corn compated favorably at both rates. Southern States 909Ewasnot tested in Virginia in 1964. In 1963 this corn didn't do well at Holland or Petersburg yielding 9 to 20% lower than our “standard” varieties. I wish there were more information on 909E, however suffice it to say it is disappointing to learn our farmers are planting practically an unknown to so great an extent. I can imagine a $2.00 wager on a sporting event, but not asking for more risk in the business of farming. Time may tell I have no research date on SS 802. Hadn't heard from Shawnee since 1961. Back then, its relative yielding ability at Orange was quite low. SS Matoaka was up to standard at both low and high rates at Orange in 1964,above standards at low rate at Blacksburg and about equal at the high planting rate. If memory serves correctly VPI 648 replaced VPI 646; it sure did better in 1961. By 1964 VPI ^>48 had become one of the “standards.” At Orange last year it made 125.7 and 127.7 bushels per acre; at Blacksburg 99 and 103.8 bushels. At Warsaw, DeKalb XL 45 had a relative yield considerably below “standard” varieties, a similar performance at Petersburg, and at Blacksburg was 11% below “Standard* varieties at the high rate and 5% lower at the low rate. DeKalb 1051 was not tested at any of the Virginia stations in 1964. We have no information Funks G711 or G 91. While this survey was not board enough to draw any detailed conclusions, several observations seem pertinent to your scribe. If profitable corn production is the aim of our farmers, I suggest the following:
