The heat pumps will be used for testing and experimentation by students interested in refrigeration, air conditioning and the heat pump The heat pump is a single unit that heats and cools, changing from one cycle to the other automatically. The units given to the schools have a five-ton capacity and “airto-air” system, using only air and electricity to provide desired room temperatures. The electric companies also installed the equipment. The heat pumps are ‘built-up” systems as opposed to manufacturers’ factory packaged models. Components for the heat pumps were assembled at the schools. Cary noted that there were several advantages to a built up system over a packaged unit, as far as use in the classroom is concerned. The built-up 6 v stem provides greater accessibility to parts for study and testing, where factory packaged units are compact in construction. The built-up system can be continuously modified to incorporate improvements and thus does not become outdated. In addition, extra components can be installed on a built-up system.
