Reviewing the Letters to the Editor in the October 21st issue I im surprised to note the conroversy which the R.L.E.P. has suddenly stirred up. I apparently nissed a previous issue in which his must all have started, lowever, I am prompted to put in i word for an element which does not appear to have been heard :rom, namely the non-voting property owner in the county. Like many others I own second home property in Rappahannock County but maintain my voting residence at my primary home. But because I can’t vote in the county doesn’t mean I’m not interested in what goes on. That’s why I subscribe to your paper and try to keep in touch with the full time residents who are my friends and neighbors. When the power line controversy arose and R.L.E.P. was formed I joined because it seemed like a good way to help fight with the citizens of the county against an unsightly encroachment. On the questionaire R.L.E.P. sent to me I indicated that my interest was in doing what was appropriate to assure development in the county took place in a manner consistent with the preservation of its natural resources. My modest contribution to R.L.E.P. was not made with the thought of attempting to put any pressure on local candidates for political office. If my memory serves me correctly one of R.L.E.P.’s notices indicated the hope that it could obtain a ruling making contributions tax deductible. Any involvement influencing elections would put an end to such hopes.
In my judgement R.LE.E.P. will serve well if it stimulates public discussion and understanding of the ecological and environmental implications of various proposals. If this is done I am quite sure the voters of the county can and will instruct their representatives appropriately.
