LUKE REQUESTED authority from the Board to write to tne state office of taxation asking that they send a representative to the September Board meeting to explain the reassessment procedures. County Accountant Walter Cox told the Supervisors that the reassessment must be done by February 1, 1978, and estimated that it would take a year and a half to complete. He
added that the new assessment would be done at full fair market value. Currently, land in Rappahannock is taxed at the appraised value, discounted 60 percent—“the highest discount of any place in Virginia that I know of,” commented Luke. Supervisor J. R. Latham suggested that the Board protest against the change in state regulations that require Rappahannock to have “another reassessment so soon.” Davis disagreed, maintaining that the reassessment could work to the advantage of Rappahannock in any attempt to tax subdivided land differently.
The Supervisors plan to take up subdivision taxation and other alternative sources of revenue, such as contractor licensing, at their July meeting.—Daphne McCullough
