MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATIONS, which are independent of the Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Mental Health-Mental Retardation Services Board, play a key part in bringing to ail citizens an awareness of die importance of good mental health. The goals of these volunteer groups are to: improve public attitudes about mental illness; improve services for the mentally ill; help prevent mental illness; • promote good mental health. Mental health associations typically do not provide direct services, but rather focus on public education and assist in bringing direct services to a community. Many of the services now offered by the Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Mental Health-Mental Retardation Services Board as described in these pages were in some way an outgrowth of the efforts of Mental Health Associations.
