PRIOR to this law’s taking effect, only 65 per cent of Virginia claimants were receiving half their average weekly wage, Masden said.
Masden pointed out that no one may receive more than half his average weekly wage, and he estimated about 20 per cent of all claimants would receive this new maximum. The cost of increasing the benefit maximum from $87 to $103, is expected to be about $1.6 million for the first year it is in effect, Masden said.
A third change in the law provides for a $30 penalty for employers who do not file their quarterly Contribution and Wage Reports on time.
