New rules
EFFECTIVE July 1, Virginia employers* can no longer notify employes that they will be on “unpaid” vacation and so make them ineligible for unemployment compensation, according to Robert L. Masden, commissioner of the Virginia Employment Commission. Also effective July 1, is a change which raises the maximum weekly benefit amount for unemployment insurance to $103, Masden said.
Previously, employes who had been notified by their employers that they would be on unpaid vacation were considered on bona fide vacation and were not eligible for unemployment insurance compensation. Now, employes on unpaid vacation will be treated like any other employes on temporary lay - off.
