Exceeding the stated or safe speed limit is the major cause of fatal highway crashes involving young drivers. “Last year in Virginia 225 drivers between the ages of 16 and 24 were involved in fatal crashes as a result of exceeding die stated or safe speed limit,” said John T. Hanna, director, Highway Safety Division of Virginia.
“Speeding, often attributed to driving under the influence of alcohol, carelessness, inexperience, or immaturity is a problem that demands the concern of everyone. Because it is difficult for new or young drivers to estimate speed, checking the speedometer frequently is a good habit to develop. Young motorists need to realize the responsibility involved in driving and observe the speed limit.”
