THE new law was passed by the legislature after extensive research which indicated a substantial savings in time and money for Virginia drivers. It is estimated that the new law will save approximately three million gallons of gasoline per year. Research also indicated a decrease in the number of accidents at right turn on red intersections. Some 27 states, including West Virginia, North Carolina and Kentucky, are now using the general right turn on red rule. “Because the law will mean a rather dramatic change from what Virginia drivers have been accustomed to, we are planning a massive public education program to begin near the end of the year,” Hanna said. “We plan to explain to everyone how to use the new law as well as to announce that it becomes effective on January 1,” he said.
