The six volumes of diaries that will be published in late July are the first of a projected 60to 75- volume series of “The Papers of George Washington.” The editing of the papers, a joint project of the University and the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association of the Union, was begun in 1968 and is expected to take some 20 years to complete.
Dr. Jackson’s staff of researchers has tracked down and collected more than 125,000 letters to and from Washington so far. While more than 50 of Washington’s personal diaries were located, others have been lost because many people didn’t realized their value. “One of his early biographers gave away pages from his diaries purely as samples of Washington’s handwriting,” Dr. Jackson said.
