Between 11:30 and midnight, Dennis said, Carter asked to be taken home. “He said he was tired and wanted to go to bed ... I took him to the home of Ed Starks. He said he was going to spend the night there.”
After reaching Ed Starks’s, Dennis testified that Carter got out and asked him to wait while he checked to see if anyone was home. “That’s when he came back . . . with a shotgun,” said Dennis.
According to Dennis, Carter said the gun was loaded and asked to be taken back to the party. Halfway into the pick-up, Carter got back out and put the gun in the back end.
“I Might Do It” When asked by Davis if Carter said anything, Dennis responded that the defendant said “I might do it.” He explained that he took Carter back to the party “because I was scared.” When they returned to Haywood Turner’s, Carter got out in the road and told Dennis to go on. “I went back to the party,” Dennis added. He continued that he didn’t see Carter again until after the shooting. “Did you hear Carter say anything then?” Davis asked.
“No sir,” answered Dennis. “He was just laughing.”
