I will end with a story that Nan related to me from the Madison Nutrition site which reflects a spirit that has long been present among the ’‘siihior citizens here if Rappahannock. For a while we were transporting people from Madison to the Orange County program before Madison had a site of it’s own. At the Orange site one day, a racial conflict occurred between a few people in everyone’s presence. Driving back, there was talk about the incident in the van and Nan asked, “What do you all think the difference is between black and white people? Does race make a difference?” After silence and some nervous replies, Maizey Brown answered with a song and the other elderly women and men joined in: Jesus loves the little children All the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white, They are precious in his sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world.
