Chemical fertilizers and certain hybridized seeds may produce lush crops under ideal environmental conditions, but because water supplies are unpredictable in most areas, she suggests that gardeners purchase hardier strains of seeds which will produce in less than perfect weather. She added that chemical fertilizers, when rain does come, may run off and be lost. She prefers instead to use organic mulches, straw, leaves and wood bark, believing that they help to hold in moisture, and as they deteriorate, add valuable nutrients to the soil.
Nesbitt will teach Organic Vegetable Gardening on Monday nights at the College, 7 to 10 p.m. beginning January 9.
The class will also get into organic methods of soil build-up. “It takes six or seven years to build a good, healthy organic soil,” she explained. This includes the use of such materials as wood ash and organic composts. Soil stripped of nutrients must be replenished before it will produce, and sometimes this may mean making purchases of some organic fertilizers, such as rock phosphate, greensand, rock powders and seaweed, she added.
