birth of Christ by traveling from afar to honor Him and to bring Him gifts. These gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh are among the most significant ever bestowed. Each one had a special meaning.
The gold represented a gift for a king, and was also symbolic of the light that was Child. Frankincense was a symbol of Christ’s divinity, for it was a rare and sacred substance which was burned only at the Holy of Holies, and when the Wise Men presented it to Jesus they were accepting him as their King of Kings.
Myrrh, another rare gum resin taken from a plant, was used in making medicines and symbolized Jesus becoming a great physician and healer. It was also used in preparing the dead ' for burial, and was therefore prophetic of the death of Christ on the Cross. It is said that in return for their gifts the Magi received charity and spiritual wealth for gold,
