Laughter

It was a rainy, grey Thursday. I have worked late the night before at the Bavarian Chef restaurant and I hate to get out of my warm toasty bed to drive the van. With visions of the sweet people I’ll see that day, I manage to overcome my resistance and roll out of bed. My sleepiness stays with me all day. With a full stomach from lunch as we drive back to Amissville, I jokingly suggest that everyone take a snooze, since I can’t. That way, they can rest for me. I stop the van to deliver Mrs. Adkins a meal outside of Washington. When I come back, Lucille King, who’s sitting in the front seat, says, "Look back there.” I turn around and see Doris Jennings, Evelyn Porter, Matty Edwards, Raymond and Rosie Hitt slouched and draped over each other, snoring loudly, eyes closed, dead to the world asleep. I burst out laughing and so do they. I am toadied by their cooperation with each other to scheme such a friendly joke on me. We chuckled all the way to Amissville that day.
