with “live weight” between 1,000 and 1,250 pounds and carcass weight between 550 and 750 pounds. Desirable weight for slaughter heifers is between 900 and 1,100 live and between 500 and 650 carcass. A lot of heifers, particularly part-Angus, finish at lower than ideal weights, Eller noted.
Frame Size Important
Frame size is the single most important factor in evaluating cattle for a yearling or feeder program, according to Eller. Cattle first grow frame, then bone and muscle before finally adding fat, he said. All cattle will eventually get fat but frame has a heavy bearing on the rate at which the animal gains, he explained.
Purebread Angus and Herefords rank in the one and two frame categories, reaching slaughter weight between 750 and 950 pounds. British breeds average out at a three frame with 950 to 1,050 slaughter weight. Hereford-Angus crosses fall in the four and five frame category, weighing between 1,050 and 1,150 at slaughter. Larger breeds, including Holsteins, Charolais and Simmental classify as six and seven frame size, weighing between 1,150 and 1,350 when slaughtered.
