Most breeders select gilts from their own herd and put their money into buying a boar, he continued. He advised choosing the gilts before they’re weaned from the sow. Since sows determine the mothering traits of their offspring, he recommended looking for gilts from sows that produce uniform litters, have good milk production and good dispositions. Allen suggested that breeders identify two or three times more gilts than they eventually plan to put into their herd on the first inspection.
