Prior to the 1950’s, breeders aimed at producing swine with curved spines and straight legs that set the animals up on their toes. Straight legged hogs had problems on concrete since this type of conformation gave no cushion for feet. Curved spines caused difficulties in rear leg movement on hard surfaces.
