there are other matters facing the Assembly. Some 500 pieces of legislation have already been introduced. But many of them are housekeeping bills that are dispensed with quickly. A public hearing may be necessary for some of them, but they do not attract large crowds.
The hottest emotional issue before this session, as it has been for the last four sessions, is the Equal Rights Amendment. Few other issues in Virginia have generated the debate and public display of support and opposition.
Last Sunday more than 3,000 pro-ERA people gathered here to show their support for ratification of the federal constitutional amendment. Led by actress Barbara Feldon, these supporters issued a challenge to Virginia. They claim that the nation is watching the Commonwealth, waiting to follow her lead.
To counter that rally, the anti-ERA people were bused in on Tuesday. All day, these people, bedecked in stop signs and carrying anti literature, haunted the halls of the Capitol and the General Assembly Office Building. They called on the legislators, sometimes in groups of 10 or 15, asking that ratification be voted down.
