Traits with high inheritability include length, percentage of backfat and percentage of lean cuts (ham, loin, Boston butt and picnic). Cooper noted that length was highly correlated with grade. Longer pigs reach higher grades and have thicker muscles and wider hams, he said. “The longer the pig, the higher percentage of backfat he can have and still make grade number one,” Cooper added.
Feed efficiency and average daily gain to 200 pounds are both characteristics with medium inheritability, according to Cooper. Number of pigs born, number of pigs weaned and litter weight at weaning all have low inheritability, said Cooper, but he noted that these traits could be improved through hybrid vigor from crossbreeding.
