RICHMOND—A supporter of horse racing in Virginia told the House of Delegates General Laws Committee Jan. 24 that if parimutuel betting is approved for the state one of the two tracks will probably be located in Northern Virginia.
William Jennings of Leesburg, president of the Virginia Horse Council, said that the two tracks would bring in about $25 million in revenues to the state per year.
"But that’s just the frosting on the cake,” Jennings said.*He said other revenues would be generated from taxes on property, corporations, sales and income.
He also said the other state track would probably be located in the Tidewater area. He said the tracks would be run on a year-round basis to avoid competition for dates.
Del. Raymond Guest Jr. (R-Front Royal), co-sponsor of the parimutuel bill, told the committee that the horse industry in the Commonwealth sees racing as a “legitimate way to exercise their industry.”
He assured the committee that the Virginia Racing Commission, which would be established on approval of parimutuel betting, would see “that the highest level, the highest calibre of individual possible” is involved in horseracing in the state.
