State Sen. A. Joe Canada, unsuccessful Republican candidate for lieutenant governor last year, has introduced legislation that would put the question of ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment to a public referendum.
This referendum, Canada’s legislation states, would merely serve in an advisory capacity for the legislators. He plans on putting the question before the voters this fall.
Canada, who had been listed as proERA until last session, cast the deciding vote in the Senate last year that defeated ratification. He said at that time he wanted to see a statewide referendum on the issue.

Several state senators have requested a study of transportation needs in rural Virginia. The resolution requesting the study says that many Virginians are unable to take advantage of state services because of a lack of transportation.
