Byrd
Portrait
Presented
The Harry Flood Byrd Memorial Commission extends a cordial invitation to the general public to attend a ceremony at the Byrd Visitor Center auditorium at Big Meadows in Shenandoah National Park, at which time The Honorable Mills E. Godwin, Jr., Chairman of the Commission, will present to the Park a portrait of the late Senator Byrd. The event will be held on Saturday, May 20, at 11:00 a.m.
Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr., will respond on behalf of the Byrd family, and acceptance of the portrait will be made by Daniel J. Tobin, Jr., Associate Director of the National Park Service.
The portrait of the late State Senator, Governor, and United States Senator, by Richmond Artist David Silvette, will be permanently displayed in the lobby of the Byrd Visitor Center following the unveiling ceremony.
“This splendid gift by the Harry Flood Byrd Memorial Commission will be very fitting on this 52nd anniversary weekend of the authorization of Shenandoah National Park,” said Park Superintendent Robert R Jacobsen, “as the late Senator was one of the Park's earliest advocates, staunchest supporters, and most enthusiastic visitors.”
