surrounding counties will pick up the parasites and release them in 3 infested spring oat fields in each county. Cereal leaf beetle parasites are tiny wasps imported from Europe which do not sting. The wasps have been fieldraised and are harmless to everything except the cereal leaf beetle. The wasps attack beetle larvae by laying their own eggs inside the host. When the parasite eggs hatch, the young wasps eat their way out—destroying the cereal leaf beetle in the process.
Where parasites have been established for several years, the control program has proven to be an effective means of controlling the cereal leaf beetle. In some areas of the U. S., parasites alone have accounted for at least 70 per cent of cereal leaf beetle mortality.
If you planted spring oats this year, I need your help to make this program successful. Please call me, if you would like to cooperate. Oat fields in which the parasites are released cannot be sprayed with a pesticide. The final decision on where to release the parasites will be based on the degree of infestation by the cereal leaf beetle larvae, the geographic location and the cultural practices to be followed on the farm.
