The Rappahannock Supervisors took a first step towards a comprehensive plan for the county at last Thursday’s Board meeting. At the request of Fanning Baumgardner, acting on behalf of the Planning Commission, the Supervisors authorized the Planners to apply for a grant application with the Farmers Home Administration to cover costs of formulating a comprehensive plan for Rappahannock.
Baumgardner told the Supervisors that Planning District 9 staffer David Marshall had suggested applying for the grant. If approved, the county would have to put up one-fourth of the total grant amount but this could be in the form of money or in-house labor contribution, according to Baumgardner. The Planning Commission reviewed and accepted Marshall’s recommendation, he reported, and needed a resolution from the Supervisors to apply for funds under section three of the Rural Planning Grants program.
The program allocates $5 million dollars for rural planning nationwide Marshall told the Supervisors. “That’s not a whole lot of money but Rappahannock meets the guidelines nicely,” he said. The grant application will be reviewed at the local, state and federal level, Marshall continued. “By applying doesn’t mean you’ll get the money,” he cautioned, but repeated that he felt Rappahannock’s chances were good on getting sufficient funds to cover the costs of
