Last Thursday night I attended the meeting of the Rappahannock Athletic Association. This meeting was to elect officers and set up committees for this summer’s youth baseball. Prominent notice was given for this meeting a week prior on the front page of this newspaper. This notice asked for your support by your attendance. I was ashamed by the lack of attendance of parents at this meeting. Twenty-two loyal Rappahannock citizens attended this meeting; twenty-two out of a possible 250-300. I use this possible figure as parents of the 150 boys and girls the RAA supplied summer recreation for last year.
The officers of RAA were saddened and disappointed at last week’s turnout. Anywhere I go in Rappahannock and everyone I talk to think it’s such a terrible shame that Rappahannock doesn’t have any organized recreation for our kids outside of school. What can our kids do all summer long?
In May of 1977 a group of people got together one night and elected officers, set up registrations, made up their minds that summer recreation was worthwhile for the boys and girls of Rappahannock, determined that they were going to supply it and two weeks later had 169 boys and girls out on the field ready to play baseball. They started without a penny, but raised a little over $1,000. They bought equipment and insurance and played ball. This same group, with a few more volunteers, worked endlessly 5, 6, 7 days a week for three months.
A lot of sacrifices were made, but the kids loved every minute of it.
At the end of the season, everyone involved had a tremendous sense of accomplishment. Many people who were not involved praised the Association for
