H. S. Barksdale was the first speaker to Masteron’s behalf. He said he’d worked closely with the incumbent school Board member for five years, serving with Masterson on the Planning Commission and the Board of Assessors. Barksdale credited Masterson with having sound judgement, honesty and integrity and said he’d been impressed by Masterson’s fairness and justice. “He’s definitely very much concerned with the welfare of the people of Rappahannock,” said Barksdale, adding that Masterson was particularly involved with the county’s school children.
Dean Hahn, noting that Masterson had helped him coach the high school baseball team, reported that Masterson spent a great deal of time visiting the schools—“more than most School Board members...The kids respected him. They liked him. He got across well to the kids," Hahn reported.
Newbill Miller described Masterson as “a person who knows what it takes to be successful.” Accordine to Miller, Masterson had succeeded in two very competitive fields —professional baseball and the sale of flour to wholesale bakeries.
